About the Artist

For over 35 years, Mark Mueller has been bringing the North American wilderness to life through highly detailed, realistic paintings. Working primarily in acrylics on hardboard, he has built a national reputation for capturing the outdoors—especially for his ability to paint the complex depth, movement, and reflections of water. While he spent many years focusing primarily on birds, his current work leans heavily toward his true passion: gamefish.

His love for drawing started at a young age, as shown through childhood sketches of everything from fish and airplanes to hand-drawn greeting cards of songbirds. While finishing his illustration degree at Syracuse University in 1990, a visit to the local Creel Creek Wildlife Gallery sparked his career path, and he sold his first painting of a brown trout there later that year. Today, his work is highly sought after by anglers, conservationists, and collectors who appreciate strict anatomical accuracy.

To achieve his signature level of realism, Mark draws directly from his own experiences as an avid fisherman and uses his own reference photos from the field. When there isn’t enough information in the reference photos for what he’s trying to achieve, he actually sculpts clay models of his subject in his studio. This hands-on process lets him see exactly how light hits the form, where shadows fall, and how features look from different angles.

Mark lives and paints in Hardyston, New Jersey. Though gamefish take center stage today, he still revisits bird painting from time to time. This passion for angling also extends into wearable art; Mark invested in his own specialized printing equipment and custom prints high-performance shirts featuring his gamefish paintings, producing each piece individually right in his studio. When he isn’t behind the easel or the press, he’s usually out on the water with his wife and three sons, pursuing his love for fishing and sharing his knowledge of wildlife and conservation.
